The Taliban has agreed to open a “political office” in Qatar to hold talks with the United States, the first time the militant group has confirmed it has an interest in negotiating with Washington. The Taliban, which has been fighting the Afghan government and the United States in Afghanistan for years, did not say what role it wanted the Afghan government to play in any negotiations.

(GMCR ) were down as much as 12% Wednesday, before closing with a loss of 4.5%, after Stifel Nicolaus & Co. told clients that demand for Keurig brewers is on the decline, with imports of the coffee-making machines down 28% in November after being up 44% through the first nine months of 2011.

Salvation Army defends anti-gay bias

According to the Salvation Army’s website, "Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex. The Salvation Army believes, therefore, that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life. There is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage." Nonetheless, the organization does go on to say that, "Likewise, there is no scriptural support for demeaning or mistreating anyone for reason of his or her sexual orientation. The Salvation Army opposes any such abuse."

The proclamation has offended gay and lesbian charity givers to the point that those opposed to the statement have redirected giving to other charities this holiday season.
